Spider-Man Exists In The Morbius Universe, According To The Director

By Josh Bate

At long last, the release of Morbius is nearly here. The film completed principal photography prior to the pandemic and was originally scheduled to release in July 2020, but was delayed due to the spread of the virus and audience’s fears about returning to movie theaters.

In recent weeks, the marketing campaign has ramped up, with actor Jared Leto doing many interviews for the upcoming Sony Marvel film, as has Daniel Espinosa, the Swedish director of Morbius. While speaking with CinemaBlend, Espinosa was asked if Spider-Man exists in the universe that Morbius takes place:

“Of course! I mean, in almost all Spider-Verse or, you know, the [universes] that existed in the Marvel universe, if you read the comic books, the whole idea of that kind of – the Marvel string theory, if you would call it that. It’s very related to, if you remember, the alternative Seinfelds. You have a world where you have the same characters, and it’s ALL of the characters, but they are slightly different. So in almost all verses, you have Spider-Man, or a Fantastic Four, or a Tony Stark, or a Morbius. But they will be different in tone.”

Fans were curious when the first trailer for Morbius showed Jared Leto walking past a graffiti image of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man as well as Michael Keaton’s Vulture, leaving some confusion as to which universe the film is set in. In a later trailer, Morbius mentions Venom too, adding to the mystery. It remains unconfirmed which universe Morbius takes place in, from the MCU to the Raimi films or even an entirely new world, but it’s also a possibility that it this question isn’t answered in the actual film, as both Venom films were unrevealing in this regard.
