Reveals and Insights from Lucasfilm’s Studio Showcase at Star Wars Celebration

By George Bate, Josh Bate, and Julie Catherine

Star Wars Celebration 2022 kicked off with a bang with a series of guests, exclusive footage, and more on display. Let’s breakdown everything that was revealed during Lucasfilm’s Studio Showcase.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

A live choir performance of ‘Duel of the Fates’ haunted the Anaheim Convention Center arena. Fittingly, Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor came out from opposite sides of the stage to face off head-to-head as Williams’ iconic composition drew to a dramatic close.

When the crowd excitement died down to a point where someone on the stage could actually be heard, Ewan McGregor introduced himself with the perfect welcoming…

Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen were joined by director Deborah Chow, who spoke about what drew her to helm the Obi-Wan series. Accompanying them was producer Kathleen Kennedy and actors Moses Ingram and Rupert Friend.

People in attendance of Lucasfilm’s Studio Showcase were invited to the World Premiere of Obi-Wan later in the day. This included a red carpet experience, live looks at the character’s costumes, popcorn and soda to snack on, and the entire cast and crew of Obi-Wan coming out on stage to introduce the event.

Also of note, a new Obi-Wan poster was on display at the convention.

Another poster was later posted on Twitter.

Andor

Andor was next up. The new Diego Luna series was confirmed to start streaming on August 31st with a 2 episode premiere, which will lead into a 12 episode first season. Production will begin on a second 12 episode season this November.

A teaser trailer of Andor was shown and subsequently released online. A first look at Stellan Skarsgard’s rebel general Luther Rail was revealed, in addition to looks at some of the espionage we will see in the new series.

Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning composer Nicholas Britell (Moonlight, Succession) will compose Andor’s score.

A new poster for the series was also revealed and given to attendees.

Ahsoka

Little information was revealed about Ahsoka. Dave Filoni confirmed filming is underway and that Rosario Dawson was unable to attend Celebration due to filming commitments. Nonetheless, Dawson greeted fans with a video on set where she briefly spoke her work on the show so far.

The Mandalorian

Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau confirmed that The Mandalorian Season 3 has wrapped filming and editing is underway. A new logo for the third season was shown, sporting a green theme that is discrepant from the orange and blue hues of the first two seasons respectively.

A teaser trailer for the new season was shown exclusively to attendees. The trailer firmly positions Bo-Katan as the central enemy of Pedro Pascal’s Mandalorian, which makes sense given the disagreements over the dark saber when we last saw these characters together. Katee Sackhoff, who appeared on stage at Celebration, looms large over the trailer. She is seen sitting atop her throne on Mandalore, the throne once taken by her sister Satine in The Clone Wars. Meanwhile, the Armorer (played by Emily Swallow) is seen reprimanding Din Djarin for removing his helmet. Din promises to correct for his “transgressions” by returning to Mandalore. The trailer also shows brief looks at Carson Teva, Peli Motto, Greef Karga (with a killer new outfit!), an undercover Dr. Pershing, and a group of Mandalorians engaged in battle. The footage concluded with Bo-Katan threateningly telling Grogu that his “father” is “not the only Mandalorian.”

The series will start streaming in February 2023.

Skeleton Crew

The much rumored Jon Watts-led Star Wars series was finally confirmed after initially being derailed in a recent issue of Vanity Fair. The series, titled Skeleton Crew, will follow a group of four children who get lost in the Star Wars galaxy and must return home (fitting given that Watts helmed the Spider-Man homecoming trilogy).

Skeleton Crew will be set after Return of the Jedi and be connected to The Mandalorian-era shows in development by Favreau and Filoni.

The series will star Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts, The Talented Mr. Ripley), but other casting news remains under wraps.

An image of concept art was shown.

Skeleton Crew will premiere on Disney+ in 2023.

Other News

In non-Star Wars related news, the teaser trailer for Willow debuted during the panel.

In addition, Harrison Ford came on stage to a standing ovation as he emotionally paid tribute to John Williams.

A first image from Indiana Jones 5 was shown to the audience.

The title of the film is still unknown and no footage was shown, but the release date was confirmed as June 30, 2023.
