Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the latest film in the MCU franchise, arrived in theaters around the world this week and dominated the global box office.
The film, once again directed by Ryan Coogler, earned $180 million domestically, an all time record that was previously held by The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Wakanda Forever focused primarily on grief and loss, fitting themes given the tragic passing of the 2018 film’s star, Chadwick Boseman. Boseman died in August of 2020 of cancer at just 43 years old, leaving behind a huge legacy and continuing to serve as an inspiration in the years since.

Globally, Wakanda Forever picked up $330 million in total this weekend from 55 territories. The past few weeks have been relatively slow at the box office but this Marvel sequel is proving to give movie theaters the boost they need prior to the holiday season.
Coogler’s epic is not the final title in the MCU this year as the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is set to arrive on Disney+ on November 25. James Gunn, now the co-head of rival DC Studios, directed the special presentation that serves as a prelude to the final film in the Guardians trilogy that releases in May of next year.
