Major ‘Star Wars’ Movie News Revealed

By George Bate & Josh Bate

While Star Wars storytelling has been active on Disney+ with a slew of brilliant television shows, it’s been a few years since a galaxy far, far away was seen on the big screen. Variety recently released a report providing updates on a number of Star Wars films in development. Here’s an overview of these updates.

Rogue Squadron

Patty Jenkins was announced as the director of a new film titled Rogue Squadron on Disney Investor Day in December 2020. Rumblings of issues behind the scenes amplified when Disney pulled the title from its release schedule in September 2022. Although Jenkins previously said, “I don’t know if it will happen or not,” Variety reports that Rogue Squadron has been shelved.

Kevin Feige’s Star Wars Movie

Also no longer in development is the Star Wars film from producer Kevin Feige and writer Michael Waldron. The duo have moved on from the project and are focusing on Avengers: Secret Wars.

Rian Johnson’s Trilogy

Rian Johnson is apparently eager to still make his Star Wars trilogy that was announced all the way back in 2017. Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy also wants to see these films come to fruition. However, between his obligations on the Knives Out movies and the Peacock series Poker Face, Johnson will be unable to work on his Star Wars project anytime soon.

Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Movie

Taika Waititi is apparantley still working on his Star Wars feature. Variety reports that, if the film is made, Waititi will likely have a part in it.

Post-Episode IX Movie

The most likely contender for the next theatrically released Star Wars film is an untitled project from writers Damon Lindelof (Lost, Watchmen) and Justin Britt-Gibson (Counterpart) and Oscar winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel, Saving Face). Rumors are that the movie will be set after The Rise of Skywalker and feature sequel trilogy characters. The film is likely to be announced at Star Wars Celebration Europe in April.
