Confirmation of Rey & Kylo Love Story in Star Wars Sequel Trilogy

By George & Josh Bate

For many, one of the most captivating elements of the Star Wars sequel trilogy was the bond between Daisy Ridley’s Rey and Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren. The two shared some key scenes in The Force Awakens before Rian Johnson gave them plenty of intimate moments in The Last Jedi and J.J. Abrams had the dyad kiss at the end of The Rise of Skywalker. Much has been speculated over the years about whether the Rey/Kylo romance (often dubbed Reylo by Star Wars fans) was always the intended plan for these characters, or if came about more overtly and spontaneously for Episode IX. Well, in a recent interview with Jimmy Kimmel, actor Eddie Redmayne revealed that a Rey/Kylo romance was always on the cards, even prior to the filming of The Force Awakens.

Eddie Redmayne, who auditioned to play Kylo Ren (and reportedly various other Star Wars characters), revealed to Jimmy Kimmel that his audition for the dark side lead character in the sequel trilogy required him to play scenes from Pride & Prejudice and Star Trek. Redmayne implies that the filmmakers were envisioning a romantic tension between Kylo Ren and Rey, akin to Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet.

This likely comes as good news for Reylo fans, who have long expressed their love for the romance between Kylo and Rey. Now, in an unexpected form via Eddie Redmayne, it appears we have more confirmation than ever that Reylo was in the plans from the beginning.
