Deadline is reporting that Simon Kinberg will write, produce, and develop a new trilogy of Star Wars films. Kinberg reportedly recently closed a deal with Lucasfilm to make the new movies, which will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy.
Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. reports that these movies will comprise Episodes X, XI, and XII of The Skywalker Saga, while others suggest Kinberg’s trilogy will begin a new saga of different characters.
This news comes after recent reports that writer Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) has left the upcoming Daisy Ridley-led New Jedi Order movie and that Lucasfilm were actively looking for a new scribe. On the press tour for her new film Magpie, Daisy Ridley also revealed that the New Jedi Order story will span several movies and will be not just limited to a single movie. Putting these pieces of news together could suggest that the trilogy Kinberg is helming may be the trilogy of New Jedi Order movies and that these films will be Episodes X, XI, and XII.
Kinberg is no stranger to a galaxy far, far away, having co-created the beloved Star Wars Rebels with Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck. Kinberg was also a consultant on The Force Awakens.
Kinberg is best known for his work producing Fox’s X-Men movies, including Logan and Deadpool & Wolverine. Kinberg eventually turned from producer/writer to director when helmed the misfire Dark Phoenix.
With this breaking news, Simon Kinberg joins the list of creatives who have been hired to develop Star Wars movies. These include James Mangold, who is developing a Dawn of the Jedi movie, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who is directing the New Jedi Order movie, Donald Glover, who is developing a Lando film, Taika Waititi, and Shawn Levy.
