‘The Substance’ Director Made a Homemade ‘Star Wars’ Film

The Substance Star Wars

Deftly blending body horror and poignant commentary on aging and beauty standards, The Substance was one of 2024’s most talked about movies and has earned multiple awards this awards season. Rightfully getting much attention and acclaim for the film is writer and director Coralie Fargeat, who has somewhat of an unexpected connection to Star Wars.

The Substance writer/director Coralie Fargeat made a Star Wars fan film when she was 17 years old, and now this film has been released by Letterboxd. The fan film features actors in homemade costumes, footage from Star Wars films, stop motion animation, Star Wars toys, unique establishing shots, John Williams’ Indiana Jones score, and more.

From Rian Johnson to Leslye Headland to Tony Gilroy, Star Wars has attracted some of the industry’s most talented filmmakers in recent years and, if her impressive fan film suggests anything, Coralie Fargeat is more than capable of handling a story in a galaxy far, far away.
