‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ Production Begins, Cast Announced

By George & Josh Bate

Star Wars: Starfighter, the upcoming Star Wars movie from director Shawn Levy, has officially started production.

In an official release published on StarWars.com, Lucasfilm shared a first look at stars Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray behind the scenes of the movie, which can be seen below.

Lucasfilm also confirmed the main cast of the film after star Ryan Gosling was officially announced to lead the film at Star Wars Celebration Japan 2025. Mia Goth and Matt Smith have been confirmed to also star in the movie, with trades like The Hollywood Reporter claiming the duo will play the film’s antagonists.

Joined Goth and Smith is Amy Adams, who will play the mother of Flynn Gray’s character. Amy Adams is no stranger to big blockbuster fare, having played Lois Lane in three DCEU movies. Now, the Academy Award-nominated actress makes the leap to a galaxy far, far away for the first time.

Playing Amy Adams’ son is Flynn Gray. The young actor who appeared in an episode of Wednesday was in contention for the role for months and competed against child actors in the U.S. and U.K. to win the role.

Hot off of his viral performance in Netflix’s Rebel Ridge, Aaron Pierre also joins the cast of Starfighter. It is unclear who the English actor, who will next be seen as John Stewart in the DCU series Lanterns, will play in the movie.

Another surprise addition to the cast is Simon Bird. The addition of the actor known for his role in the hit series The Inbetweeners is particularly funny given the actor is known for his impression of Yoda in the series when he said, “Feisty one you are!”

Other additions to the cast include Jamael Westman and Daniel Ings. Westman is known for playing the title role in the West End production of Hamilton, while Ings has appeared in the Netflix shows Sex Education, The Gentlemen, and Black Mirror.

As of now, little is known of the plot of Star Wars: Starfighter. The film is set is five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker and is “a standalone film not connected to previous Star Wars movies or characters from the so-called Skywalker Saga.” The Hollywood Reporter claims that the plot will follow Gosling as he is tasked with protecting a “young charge from evildoers in a galaxy-spanning adventure.”

Director Shawn Levy released a statement to honor the start of production. Check out the statement below….

“I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter. From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally. Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”

Producing the film alongside Levy are Dan Levine (Arrival), Mary McLaglen (War for the Planet of the Apes), and Josh McLaglen (Logan).

Jonathan Tropper, known for creating the shows Banshee and Warrior, has been announced as the screenwriter of the movie.

Star Wars: Starfighter hits theaters May 28, 2027.
