As the second night of the Emmys has concludes, the hit Star Wars series Andor comes away with an incredible five awards.
In today’s ceremony, the series was up for three awards: Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series. Dan Gilroy won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for his work on the acclaimed episode “Welcome to the Rebellion.” Yes, this means that Mon Mothma’s speech to the Senate is now an Emmy award winning speech.
In his acceptance speech, Dan Gilroy said, “We have friends everywhere,” a reference to the line repeated by followers of Luthen Rael’s in the show. Gilroy also took the time to thank Star Wars fans in his speech. “I want to thank the fans, who did more than watch,” Gilroy said. “They listened. They cared. And they made a story about ordinary people fighting impossible odds possible.”
Disappointingly for the Andor team, Outstanding Drama Series went to The Pitt, while Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series went to Slow Horses,
But make no mistake about it. This is a monumental achievement. With Gilroy’s award, Andor becomes the first Star Wars series ever to win an Emmy for Best Writing. It also means that Andor closes out television awards season with 5 wins out of 14 nominations. Such a performance at the Emmys is unheard of for a series part of a large franchise like Star Wars.
