A surprise present from Lucasfilm and Industrial Light & Magic is dropping just in time for Christmas this year.
Arriving on Star Wars Kids on Tuesday 12/23, The Gingerbread Death Star Trench Run is a new short film that reimagines the iconic trench run scene from A New Hope made entirely out of gingerbread cookies.
One of the creators of the film is ILM artist Landis Fields, who drew on his love for baking reality shows to make the short film. “We gather a bunch of references and use devices to capture things in 3D and bring them into the computer so we can compare them to the ones that we’re building,” Fields said in an interview with StarWars.com. “It just adds this extra level of believability and charm and magic.”
But that’s not all…

The article on StarWars.com implies that The Gingerbread Death Star Trench Run is part of a new series of animated shorts called Star Wars Minis. One of these shorts appears to involve a Japanese Chibi-style C-3PO (as seen in the picture above).
A behind-the-scenes featurette that will drop alongside the short tomorrow offers a sneak-peak at another new Star Wars Mini, which reimagines a Mandalorian and Grogu adventure made entirely from yarn. The behind the scenes image below shows an ILM creative using real-time tools to move a virtual camera around Mando’s cockpit.

“No matter what the style, we always wanted for them to feel small,” Fields said. “So whether it’s a gingerbread cookie, crocheted dolls, or even the Japanese Chibi-style, they feel like something that a kid would be playing with.”
Stay tuned for Star Wars Minis to launch with The Gingerbread Death Star Trench Run tomorrow on Star Wars Kids.
