Legendary director David Lynch will reportedly make a surprising return with a new, secret film premiering at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. As reported initially by Variety, Lynch will premiere a feature film that will include Laura Dern in some capacity. Joining Dern will be a host of unnamed Lynch regulars.
Details are under wraps about what Lynch’s new film will entail, but, if his filmography is a hint of what’s to come, viewers will be in for something truly unique. Lynch’s last directorial effort, beyond various short films, was 2017’s Twin Peaks: The Return, a masterpiece that is one of the greatest television events of all time. Lynch’s last venture on the big screen was 2005’s Inland Empire, which featured his regular collaborator Laura Dern.

It’s unknown at this time who will accompany Dern in Lynch’s new film, but Variety’s report that it will feature Lynch regulars offers some hints. Lynch frequently works with composer Angelo Badalamenti, Johanna Ray as his casting director, and Mary Sweeney as his editor. In front of the camera, actors Kyle MacLachlan, Naomi Watts, Isabella Rossellini, and Grace Zabriskie are known to appear across various Lynch projects.
This year’s Cannes Film Festival kicks off on May 17 and concludes on May 28. On May 24, the festival will host a special 75th anniversary celebration featuring a gathering of filmmakers to discuss the future of cinema and what it means to be a director in the modern day.
