Game of Thrones Spin-Off Series In Development

By George Bate

Fans will return to Westeros with the new series House of the Dragon, a prequel of Game of Thrones focusing on House Targaryen. And, despite the divisive conclusion to Game of Thrones, HBO has a host of spin-off shows in development in an effort to further build out George R.R. Martin’s universe on television.

Here’s a look ahead at all of the Game of Thrones spin-off shows in development.

House of the Dragon

Kicking things off is House of the Dragon. Set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon follows members of House Targaryen fighting among themselves for control of the Iron Throne. House of the Dragon premieres today on HBO Max and stars Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Paddy Considine as King Viserys I Targaryen, Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Rhys Ifans as Ser Otto Hightower, and Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon.

Jon Snow

Arguably the main character of Game of Thrones will get his own solo show following the events of the main series. The series was Kit Harrington’s idea and offers the chance to expand upon Snow’s journey after he moved permanently beyond the Wall.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

Based on George R.R. Martin’s novella series Tales of Dunk and Egg, this spin-off series will take place about 90 years before Game of Thrones. Adapting the short story titled The Hedge Knight for its first season, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will follow the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, a.k.a. Dunk, and his squire Prince Aegon Targaryen, a.k.a. Egg.

Ten Thousand Ships

The spin-off series that takes place earliest in the timeline, Ten Thousand Ships will follow Princess Nymeria of the Rhoynar in a story set 1000 years before Game of Thrones. The show will apparently focus on Nymeria’s attempts to secure a new home for her people after a devastating war.

The Sea Snake

The Sea Snake is a spin-off to a spin-off. It will follow Lord Corlys Velaryon, played by Steve Toussaint in House Of The Dragon in a prequel story. Rome co-creator Bruno Heller is leading the series as showrunner.

The Golden Empire

The only confirmed animated series in the Game of Thrones universe will be titled The Golden Empire. Set in a region of Essos called Yi Ti, the series’ concept art has received glowing reception from creator Martin.

House of the Dragon is now streaming on HBO Max.
