New Movies & Shows to Watch – August 2023

The summer continues with a host of exciting new movies hit theaters and television shows hitting streaming services. Check out a list of and descriptions for all the movies and shows to keep an eye on this month below:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

When: August 2

Where: In theaters

Plot: The latest iteration of everyone’s favorite pizza-loving, crime-fighting group of turtles comes from co-writer and executive producer Seth Rogan. The new film is an origin story for the ninja turtles, following them as they take on their first mission to save New York City. Check out our review here.

Physical – Season 3

When: August 2

Where: Apple TV+

Plot: This underrated dark comedy stars Rose Byrne, who plays Sheila Rubin – a quietly tormented housewife in 1980s San Diego. On the surface, Sheila is composed and normal, but, behind closed doors, she battles extreme personal demons and a vicious inner voice. Things change though when she discovers aerobics, sparking a journey toward empowerment and success.

Meg 2: The Trench

When: August 4

Where: In theaters

Plot: Jonas Taylor (played by Jason Statham) leads a research team on an exploratory dive into the deepest depths of the ocean. Their voyage spirals into chaos when a malevolent mining operation threatens their mission and forces them into a high-stakes battle for survival. Pitted against colossal, prehistoric sharks and relentless environmental plunderers, they must outrun, outsmart and outswim their merciless predators.

Only Murders in the Building – Season 3

When: August 8

Where: Hulu

Plot: The hit, warm and cozy murder mystery series returns with a third season. When actor Ben Glenroy (played by Paul Rudd) is killed, the sleuthing trio of Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez go back into action to uncover the identity of the killer. Read our review of Season 3 here.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter

When: August 11

Where: In theaters

Plot: Dracula’s unholy presence dooms the crew of the merchant ship Demeter as it sails from Carpathia to London.

Blue Beetle

When: August 18

Where: In theaters

Plot: Jaime Reyes suddenly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology called the Scarab. When the Scarab chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he’s bestowed with an incredible suit of armor that’s capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the DC superhero Blue Beetle. Susan Sarandon and George Lopez co-star.

Strays

When: August 18

Where: In theaters

Plot: Abandoned on the mean city streets by his lowlife owner, Doug, a naive but lovable dog named Reggie falls in with a fast-talking, foul-mouthed Boston Terrier and his gang of strays. Determined to seek revenge, Reggie and his new canine pals embark on an epic adventure to get him home and make Doug pay for his dirty deed.

Ahsoka

When: August 23

Where: Disney+

Plot: The newest Star Wars series follows Ahsoka Tano, a Jedi with a long history dating back to the Clone Wars who finds herself hunting for her friend Ezra Bridger and the villainous Grand Admiral Thrawn. Prepare for the new show with our watch guide here.

Gran Turismo

When: August 25

Where: In theaters

Plot: Based on the true story of a gamer, whose skills wins him the chance to become a professional race car driver.
