New Movies & Shows to Watch – May 2024

This May will see the release of a Mad Max prequel, a new Star Wars show, more Doctor Who, a critically acclaimed action movie starring Ryan Gosling, and so much more. Check out a list of and descriptions for the movies and shows we think you should keep an eye on this month below:

The Fall Guy

When: May 3

Where: In theaters

Plot: After leaving the business one year earlier, battle-scarred stuntman Colt Seavers (played by Ryan Gosling) springs back into action when the star of a big studio movie suddenly disappears. As the mystery surrounding the missing actor deepens, Colt soon finds himself ensnared in a sinister plot that pushes him to the edge of a fall more dangerous than any stunt. Emily Blunt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Hannah Waddingham co-star in this new action movie directed by David Leitch (Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw) and loosely based on the 1980s TV series.

Tarot

Where: In theaters

Plot: Friends unwittingly unleash an unspeakable evil trapped within a cursed deck of tarot cards. One by one, they come face to face with fate, racing against death to escape the future foretold in their readings.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace – 25th Anniversary Re-Release

When: May 3

Where: In theaters

Plot: The first of three prequel trilogy Star Wars films is re-released in theaters to celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary. A special preview of the upcoming Disney+ series The Acolyte will screen with the re-release.

Star Wars: Tales of the Empire

When: May 4

Where: Disney+

Plot: Six original shorts, three of which focusing on Morgan Elsbeth and three of which focusing on Barriss Offee, comprise this new Star Wars animated series.

Dark Matter

When: May 8

Where: Apple TV+

Plot: Jason Dessen (played by Joel Edgerton) is abducted into an alternate version of his life; to get back to his true family, he embarks on a harrowing journey to save them from the most terrifying foe imaginable: himself; based on Black Crouch’s best-selling book. Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, and Jimmi Simpson co-star.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

When: May 10

Where: In theaters

Plot: Many years after the reign of Caesar, a young ape goes on a journey that will lead him to question everything he’s been taught about the past and make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.

Doctor Who – Season 14

When: May 11

Where: Disney+

Plot: Ncuti Gatwa stars at the Fifteenth Doctor in what will be the fifth Doctor Who series led by head writer and executive producer Russell T Davis.

Interview with the Vampire – Season 2

When: May 12

Where: AMC+

Plot: Entertainment Weekly describes the show: “Interview With the Vampire will return for season 2 on Sunday, May 12. The show picks up in the year 2022, with vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson) recounting his life story to journalist Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian) after the bloody events in New Orleans in 1940 when Louis and teen vampire Claudia (now played by Delainey Hayles) tried to kill Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid). The adventure continues as Louis and Claudia escape to Europe on a quest to discover Old World Vampires and the Theatre Des Vampires in Paris, and it’s there that Louis meets vampire Armand (Assad Zaman). Louis and Armand’s love affair will prove to have devastating consequences both in the past and in the future.”

Bridgerton – Season 3

Where: Netflix

Plot: During the Regency era in England, eight close-knit siblings of the powerful Bridgerton family attempt to find love.

Back to Black

When: May 17

Where: In theaters

Plot: This biopic about singer Amy Winehouse is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and follows Winehouse as her tumultuous relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil inspires her to write and record her groundbreaking album “Back to Black.”

The Strangers: Chapter 1

When: May 17

Where: In theaters

Plot: After their car breaks down in an eerie small town, a young couple is forced to spend the night in a remote cabin. Panic ensues as they are terrorized by three masked strangers who strike with no mercy and seemingly no motive. This will be the first of three prequel films in The Strangers franchise, all of which are directed by Renny Harlin.

IF

When: May 17

Where: In theaters

Plot: After discovering she can see everyone’s imaginary friends (IFs), a girl embarks on a magical adventure to reconnect forgotten IFs with their kids. Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming star in the third movie directed by John Krasinski.

I Saw the TV Glow

When: May 17

Where: In theaters

Plot: A classmate introduces teenage Owen to a mysterious late-night TV show — a vision of a supernatural world beneath their own. In the pale glow of the television, Owen’s view of reality begins to crack. This psychological horror film from A24 stars Justice Smith and Phoebe Bridgers.

Babes

When: May 17

Where: In theaters

Plot: Pregnant from a one-night-stand, Eden (played by Ilana Glazer) leans on her best friend and mother of two, Dawn (played by Michelle Buteau), to guide her through gestation and beyond.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

When: May 24

Where: In theaters

Plot: Snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers, young Furiosa (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) falls into the hands of a great biker horde led by the warlord Dementus (played by Chris Hemsowrth). Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel, presided over by the Immortan Joe. As the two tyrants fight for dominance, Furiosa soon finds herself in a nonstop battle to make her way home.

The Garfield Movie

When: May 24

Where: In theaters

Plot: Garfield (voiced by Chris Pratt) has an unexpected reunion with his long-lost father, a scruffy street cat who draws him into a high-stakes heist.

In a Violent Nature

When: May 31

Where: In theaters

Plot: This new horror movie from director Chris Nash and distributor Shudder adopts the perspective of a killer in a slasher movie. When a group of teens takes a locket from a collapsed fire tower in the woods, they unwittingly resurrect the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year old crime. The undead killer soon embarks on a bloody rampage to retrieve the stolen locket, methodically slaughtering anyone who gets in his way.

Where: In theaters

Plot: Viggo Mortensen stars in, writes, directs, produces, and composes the score for this upcoming Western film that premiered at the 2023 Toronto international Film Festival. When the man she loves, Holger Olsen (played by Viggo Mortensen), goes off to fight in the Civil War, Vivienne Le Coudy must fend for herself in a place controlled by a corrupt mayor and his unscrupulous business partner. When Olsen returns from the war, he and Vivienne must confront and make peace with the person each has become.
