What’s New in Star Wars – May 2024

May is typically a busy month for Star Wars, but this May in particular has notably more in store than usual. Not only does a beloved Star Wars show come to an end, but a brand new show debuts, tickets for the next Star Wars Celebration go on sale, and fans can experience The Phantom Menace again in the theaters. Below includes a list and description of upcoming Star Wars projects in the month of May 2024. It is important to note that all of these release dates are subject to change.

May 1 – The Bad Batch – Season 3, Episode 15: “The Cavalry Has Arrived” 

The series finale of The Bad Batch kicks off a month full of exciting Star Wars releases. 

May 1 – Phantom Menace 25th Anniversary Special 1 

A new one-shot comic from writer Greg Pak and illustrators Will Sliney and Guru-eFX celebrates the 25th anniversary of The Phantom Menace. The publisher’s summary is as follows: “CELEBRATING THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PHANTOM MENACE WITH AN ALL-NEW STORY! Explore the earliest days and secret inner life of ANAKIN SKYWALKER with never-before-seen, revelatory stories set before, after and between the scenes of the classic movie! Featuring the dream of a JEDI, the gift of a TUSKEN RAIDER, the heart of a GUNGAN, the ache of a mother and the horror of a hero!”

May 2 – Star Wars Celebration Japan Tickets on Sale

Tickets for Star Wars Celebration Japan go on sale to the general public on May 2nd. The upcoming convention celebrating everything from a galaxy far, far away will be held from April 18 – April 20 next year. Tickets can be purchased here.

May 3 – The Phantom Menace – 25th Anniversary Theatrical Re-Release

Twenty-five years since its release and The Phantom Menace comes back into theaters for fans to enjoy. A special preview of The Acolyte will accompany screenings of the film.

May 4 – Tales of the Empire 

The successor to Tales of the Jedi, Tales of the Empire is a new Star Wars series debuting on this year’s Star Wars Day. The season will comprise of six original shorts, three of which focusing on Morgan Elsbeth and three of which focusing on Barriss Offee.

May 4 – Star Wars/Darth Vader 1 – Free Comic Book Day

This year’s Free Comic Book Day sees the release of two new Star Wars comics. One of these comics is a one-shot written by Charles Soule and Greg Pak and with illustrations by Ibraim Roberson, Ramon Rosanas, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Guru-eFX. The publisher’s summary for the new comic is as follows: “Are there REBEL survivors stranded on HOTH? LUKE SKYWALKER, LEIA ORGANA, LANDO CALRISSIAN and CHEWBACCA mount a dangerous rescue mission to ECHO BASE! Lightsabers! Blasters! Snowtroopers! All-out action amongst the wreckage of AT-AT walkers, Rebel airspeeders and frozen weapons of mass destruction!

DARTH VADER employes a surprise character from the past to help him find LUKE SKYWALKER. But SABE, [sic] former handmaiden of PADME AMADALA [sic] is also on a quest for the son of Vader. Having worked for him as an IMPERIAL COMMANDER, Sabe [sic] has enough resources to cause chaos for anyone who stands in her path. How will this affect the DARK LORD’S plans to remove PALPATINE from power?”

May 4 – Young Jedi Adventures Free Comic Book Day 2024 

Fan-favorite characters Qort and Nubs meet in this new comic releasing for Free Comic Book Day. Written by Daniel José Older and illustrated by Andy Duggan, the one-shot comic is published by Dark Horse Comics. The publisher’s summary is as follows: “Journey to a galaxy far, far away with the younglings from the hit Disney+ streaming series Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures, and guest-starring characters from the hit Dark Horse comic series Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures in “Sky Parade Rescue!”

Featuring two of Jedi Master Yoda’s brightest students, Padawan Qort and Youngling Nubs!”

May 7 – Return of the Jedi: The 40th Anniversary Special

May 7 – Star Wars: The Mandalorian Vol. 2

Yusuke Osawa’s manga adaptation of The Mandalorian releases this month.

May 7 – Star Wars: Visions – The Manga Anthology

This new trade paperback collects four manga adaptations of Star Wars: Visions episodes. Published by Viz Media in the U.S., writers include Kamone Shirahama, Haruichi, Yusuke Osawa, and Satou Keisuke.

May 8 – Darth Vader 46 

Greg Pak’s excellent Darth Vader comic series continues this month with its 46th issue. The publisher’s summary is as follows: “THE RAZING OF EXEGOL, PART ONE!

DARTH VADER and the SCHISM IMPERIAL launch their boldest challenge to the power of PALPATINE with an assault on EXEGOL, the home of the EMPEROR’S greatest secrets and treasures!

But if sheer brute force can’t overcome the defenses of the SITH CITADEL, what terrifying new resources will the DARK LORD draw upon?

May 8 – The High Republic 7 

The seventh issue of The High Republic comic series for Marvel Comics debuts this month. The publisher’s summary for the comic written by Cavan Scott and illustrated by Marika Cresta is as follows: “BALM OF THE LUMINOUS!

DEATH at the heart of NIHIL SPACE. HOPE in the midst of despair.

JEDI MASTER KEEVE TRENNIS has gathered a band of battle-weary Jedi, pirates and wanderers, but how long will they remain united as the CHILDREN OF THE STORM make their move?

May 15 – Mace Windu 4 

The fourth and final issue of Marc Bernardin and Georges Jeanty’s Mace Windu comic series debuts this month. The publisher’s summary is as follows: “INTRODUCING THE SHROUD!

Just as MACE and smuggler AZITA CRUUZ arrive at her freighter, they’re beset by MURO, DIYA and the leader of their cult, THE SHROUD.

‘The Shroud is something that Mace Windu was never trained for and isn’t prepared for – and might push a JEDI KNIGHT to his breaking point!”

May 15 – The High Republic Adventures 6 

Written by Daniel José Older and illustrated by Harvey Tolibao and Michael Atiyeh, the sixth issue of this Dark Horse Comics series is published this month. The publisher’s summary is as follows: “On the edge of the Occlusion Zone, the Republic outpost on Eriadu is a safe place for a reunion of allies. After a year of hoping, searching, and daring rescues, Zeen, Lula, and more friends have made their way to this new home. Reunited, it’s time to face their destiny and stand together against the fearsome onslaught of the Nihil from beyond the Stormwall.

What new challenges await our heroes on the next leg of their journey?”

May 15 – The High Republic Adventures – Saber for Hire 2 

The second issue of this High Republic-set comic mini-series hits shelves this May. The publisher’s summary for the comic written by Cavan Scott and written by Rachael Stott is as follows: “The Nihil are kidnapping children with Force abilities. Can Ty Yorrick, former jedi turned monster hunter, find them before it’s too late? And what will Ty’s frustrated apprentice do when he discovers that the villainous space pirates are also targeting the son of the Republic Chancellor? Plus: Ty has an encounter that will change her life forever!”

May 22 – Star Wars 46 

Charles Soule’s Marvel Comics series exploring the time between Episodes V and VI continues with its 46th issue. The publisher’s summary is as follows: “OPERATION: RESCUE MON MOTHMA!

The fate of the REBEL ALLIANCE has become intertwined with accused traitor LANDO CALRISSIAN – if he falls, so will the Rebellion.

LEIA ORGANA must mount a desperate rescue mission if there is any hope of defeating the evil GALACTIC EMPIRE!”

May 29 – Darth Maul – Black, White & Red 2 

After an awesome first issue last week, this Darth Maul comic miniseries continues to unfold with its second issue this May. The publisher’s summary is as follows: “MAYHEM AT THE MOONBENDER COLONY!

Who are THE REMAINDERS, and what threat are they to LORD PALPATINE?

DARTH MAUL is sent to conquer a mining colony single-handed, but the unexpected opposition becomes an intense battle of life and death!

May 29 – Jango Fett 3

Everyone’s favorite simple man trying to make his way through the universe stars in this comic from writer Ethan Sacks and illustrator Luke Ross. The publisher’s summary for the third issue is as follows: “JANGO VS. AURRA SING!

The heavyweight BOUNTY HUNTER battle that will shake the galaxy!

Who is the mysterious figure behind the heist that is igniting a war?
