Many films attempt to couch cutting social commentary with touching drama, but few as deftly achieve this as My Home Unknown. The film from first-time feature direct Yaz Canli (Monster Hunters), which recently released on Digital and on Demand, is an eye-opening and gripping tale of love, loss, homelessness, spirituality, substance use, and mental illness that ranks among the year’s most emotionally powerful movies.
My Home Unknown follows Mina (played by director and writer Canli), a gifted artist who finds herself in the middle of a crisis. While experiencing homelessness, Mina’s mental health further deteriorates when she loses her beloved dog Burrito. Battling with aspects of her Muslim past concurrent with the struggles of what it is like to be homeless, Mina begins a harrowing journey to overcome her struggles and achieve the courage it takes to find her way home.
