One year after successfully launching the newly-minted DCU with James Gunn’s Superman, DC Studios hones in on another Kryptonian for its latest summer blockbuster.
Milly Alcock, Jason Momoa, and director Craig Gillespie appeared at The Dolby Colosseum during CinemaCon 2026 to discuss their upcoming superhero film Supergirl. Fitting given that he is playing the motorcycle-riding alien Lobo, Momoa came on stage via a motorcycle.
Alcock discussed her experience working on Supergirl. “I think I’ve learned so much from playing this character,” the House of the Dragon actress reflected. Gillespie went on to describe Kara as a “complex and flawed” female character that must face her traumatic past.
Momoa, meanwhile, described taking on the role of Lobo as “a dream come true.” He elaborated, “These were the comics I read as a kid.”
Beyond taking on the role he has dreamed about since childhood, Momoa said that he was drawn to the movie’s emotional resonance.
Momoa revealed during the presentation that he shot 15-18 days for the film.
Safran asked Momoa who thinks would win in a fight: Aquaman or Lobo. Momoa replied, “They would take one look at each other and have a hundred beers.” He then said he’d love to see the two come together and convince the heads of DC Studios to make an Aquaman and Lobo team-up movie. “I want to be moved and go to the cinema and be with other people who are moved,” says Jason Momoa about Supergirl. “This is as good as it gets.”
Director Craig Gillespie was particularly eager to talk about Alcock’s Kara Zor-El speaking five different languages in the movie and training an hour each day to play the demanding role. The character required the actress to do entire pages of dialogue in languages designed for the film. Gillespie highlighted an “incredibly emotional scene” in which Kara speaks Kryptonian with her father as his favorite part of filming.
The plot of Supergirl centers around Krypto, the adorable superdog that appeared in last year’s Superman. Alcock discussed how Krypto was played by an actual dog for one day on set, but the Romanian street dog they cast would not obey commands. In turn, they chose to create the dog digitally.

The scene begins as Kara waits at a bus station-type place on a far away planet. She is picked up by a space transport filled with all manner of strange creatures that would not be out of place in the Mos Eisley Cantina.
Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young girl played by Eve Ridley, follows Kara onto the space transport but is quickly pinned down by a strange alien. Kara speaks the alien’s odd language and manages to get Ruthye out of trouble.
Ruthye proceeds to sit next to Kara on the space transport, although trouble doesn’t stop there.
Suddenly, a group of tech pirates appear on the transport and start to pickpocket everyone. As Kara is not near what she calls a “yellow sun,” she does not have superpowers that would allow her to quickly eliminate the raiders.
Kara puts up a fight regardless, although she is defeated and locked in hold on the transport. After trying to get the transport driver and his little alien companion to move the vessel closer to the sun, Kara’s attempts to put on a space suit are interrupted when the pirates release her into space.
Hope seems to be lost for Kara as she drifts off into space. However, she drifts in the direction of the sun and soon garners powers that render her more than capable of swiftly eliminating the enemies by removing the engines of their ship.
A new trailer was presented after the scene that was far better than the first publicly released trailer we got a few weeks ago. Although the film still looks, feels, and sounds too much like Guardians of the Galaxy, there’s a stronger emotional throughline in the trailer, especially as we see how Kara’s cynicism contrasts her cousin Clark’s optimism.
Supergirl is in theaters June 26, 2026.
