MUBI Fest returns to Chicago next month for a weekend full of exclusive screenings, live musical performances, an open-air market featuring local Chicago shops, and more.
Taking place from July 10-12 to The Salt Shed, The Music Box Theatre and the Gene Siskel Film Center, MUBI Fest comes courtesy of MUBI, the global distributor, streaming service and production company responsible for modern classics like The Substance and Portrait of a Lady On Fire.
This year’s highlight comes in the form of the Chicago premiere of Jane Schoenbrun’s highly anticipated Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. The film from the director of I Saw the TV Glow stars Hannah Einbinder as a queer filmmaker, who is hired to direct a new installment of a long-running slasher franchise. A frenzy of psychosexual mania ensues when she develops a close relationship with the reclusive actress who played the final girl in the original movie (Gillian Anderson). Schoenbrun’s film will screen at 7pm CT at the Music Box Theatre on July 10.

Also screening at MUBI Fest is a sneak preview of Karim Aïnouz’s Rosebush Pruning starring Callum Turner, Riley Keough, Elle Fanning and Pamela Anderson, which will take place at 4:30pm on July 11. The film, which made its world premiere at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival, is a satirical black comedy centered on an affluent but perverse family.
Marking one of the more unusual events MUBI Fest has in store, a special scented screening experience of Coralie Fargeat’s Academy-Award winning The Substance will take place on Saturday July 11 at 12:00pm.. The screening will reportedly be reminiscent of the classic John Waters’ Odorama screenings.

Other MUBI Fest screenings include a live score performance of Kelly Reichardt’s The Mastermind with composer Rob Mazurek, a special repertory 35mm screenings of Lurker featuring an in-person Q&A with director Alex Russell, a 10th anniversary sing-along screening of Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, and 25th anniversary screenings of Ocean’s Eleven and The Royal Tenenbaums.
