Next month, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will swing back into theaters after a five year absence with the highly anticipated Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Ahead of the film’s release on July 31, Sony Pictures has treated Spidey fanatics with a new trailer that aligns with the announcement that tickets are now on sale.

The first shot of the trailer shows the logo for a pizza restaurant named ‘Gen’s Pizza.’ The red writing, white background, and circle around the writing are reminicent of Joe’s Pizza from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2.
Spider-Man faces off against Scorpion at the beginning of the trailer. Scorpion, a.k.a Mac Gargan, is played by Michael Mando, who is known for his roles as Nacho Varga in Better Call Saul and Vaas Montenegro in the video game franchise Far Cry.
Spider-Man has a new suit in the trailer, which will be available on the PS5 game Spider-Man just a few days before the movie releases.
Scorpion asks Spider-Man, “Did you miss me, Spidey?” The last time Scorpion appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was in the post-credits scene of 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, in which he committed to seeking his revenge against the web-slinger for landing him in prison.
Spider-Man’s red/black eyes and him stating that he is out of his mind and out of control certainly evokes how Spidey has reacted to the Symbiote in previous iterations of the character, although that is almost certainly not what is happening here.
The trailer features an awesome new rendition of Michael Giacchino’s Spider-Man theme.
Peter Parker watches a video of his best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) and girlfriend MJ (Zendaya), both of whom no longer remember him following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. It seems like a significant part of Brand New Day’s narrative will be following Peter as he tries to reconnect with his closest companions.
Peter is surprised when webs organically shoot out of his wrists. In the classic Marvel comics created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Peter Parker designed his own mechanical web-shooters. The movies starring Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland (at least, so far) have followed the comics by having a Spider-Man who uses his intellect to invent mechanical shooters. Brand New Day, however, will follow Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man movies by giving Peter the ability to generate webbing from biological glands in his wrists.
Peter wears a hoodie with ‘Empire State University’ on it when he seeks consultation from Bruce Banner. The first reference of Empire State University was in The Incredible Hulk (2008) when Samuel Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson) was also wearing Empire State University attire.
Peter Parker and Bruce Banner seemingly interacted off-screen before given that they both fought against Thanos’ army and attended Tony Stark’s funeral in Avengers: Endgame, but Brand New Day marks the first time that the two characters have interacted on-screen.
Banner wears a Hulk Inhibitor Device, which dampens the gamma in his system and stops him from transforming into The Hulk.
Peter’s mutation occurs at an interesting time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Kevin Feige and company gear up for their version of the X-Men in coming years. So far, Namor and Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel are two mutants known to exist in Earth-616. Now, Spidey joins their ranks.
Tramell Tillman is playing a character named Metzger, who is Director of the Department of Damage Control. In the comics, Bill Metzger was a prominent anti-mutant activist, who was eventually killed by Magneto after pioneering a project to eliminate all mutants.
A hooded figure whose face is obscured appears in the trailer. Although not confirmed, it is almost certain that this character is played by Sadie Sink, known for her role as Max in Stranger Things. Much speculation has surrounded the exact role Sink is playing in Brand New Day, with the latest rumors suggesting that she is playing Jean Grey.
If indeed Sink is playing Jean Grey, this is a decidedly different take on the character than we’ve seen previously. She doesn’t appear to be involved with the X-Men and she seems to be a fugitive on the run. The strong moral code typically associated with Jean Grey seems to not have solidified yet. It’s also strange that the MCU would use a Spider-Man sequel to introduce a core member of the X-Men.
Sadie Sink’s character’s powers appear to take over all of New York City, with Sink seemingly having the ability to speak through random New Yorkers working around the city. As Metzger says, however, Spider-Man is the one person immune to these powers. Why is that the case? Does it have something to do with his recent mutation? Or does it have something to do with his heightened Spidey senses?
We see Peter try to reconnect with MJ and Ned at a party. Ned is trying to uncover the identity of Spider-Man, while MJ is seen smooching with her new boyfriend, played by Ahsoka actor Eman Esfandi.
On Ned’s board of Spider-Man theories, a newspaper clipping reads: “10 years ago, Carlos Rodriguez was a viral sensation with his impressive parkour videos until he mysteriously stopped uploading. Could it be that he picked up a new identity?” In the comics, Carlos Rodriguez is a minor villain and member of the Y-Men, a criminal gang based in California.
We get the first look at Savage Hulk in the new trailer of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. In a recent interview with Fandango, the cast teased that The Hulk will be a different color in the movie, possibly teasing the live-action debut of Grey Hulk.
Hulk uses his iconic Thunderclap move against Spider-Man in the trailer. Hulk used this move in The Incredible Hulk when he used it to extinguish a helicopter fire. In Captain America: Brave New World, Red Hulk used the Thunderclap against Sam Wilson.
Spider-Man Brand New Day trailer breakdown
Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May, who died in Spider-Man: No Way Home, contributes to narration in the trailer when she says, “This whole thing can get really scary, but the people who love you love you because you’re you. Never forget that, no matter how powerful you become.”
Jon Bernthal makes his feature film debut as Frank Castle / The Punisher in the trailer. There’s a shot earlier in the trailer that seems to suggest Frank may also be immune to Sadie Sink’s character’s mind-hijacking powers, although this is unclear.
Frank has a cup of coffee next to him in one shot. Across The Punisher and Daredevil, Frank is often seen with a cup of black coffee.
Spider-Man faces off against The Hand in the trailer. The Hand, led by Nobu Yoshioka, was an ancient order of ninjas and a primary antagonist in the Defenders saga, namely in Daredevil Season 2, Iron Fist Season 1, and The Defenders.

May Parker‘s gravestone confirms that Spider-Man: No Way Home took place in 2024. The filmakers also used Marisa Tomei’s real birthyear (1964) as the birthyear of May.
