This week, Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated epic fantasy film The Odyssey hits theaters. Last week, Denis Villenueve’s third and final installment in the Dune franchise was previewed during a stunning Global IMAX Fan Event. Nolan and Villeneueve’s films are arguably the two most anticipated cinematic events of 2026 and interestingly a narrative connection.
The family name “Atreides” isn’t something Frank Herbert invented for the protagonist of his initial Dune novels. In ancient Greek, “Atreides” literally means “descendant of Atreus.” It was the title Homer repeatedly uses for both Agamemnon and Menelaus throughout The Iliad and The Odyssey. Rather than calling Agamemnon by his name, Homer frequently refers to him simply as “the Atreides.”
In Dune, House Atreides traces its origins back to the legendary House of Atreus, making Paul part of the same mythical bloodline as Agamemnon. Whether every detail of that genealogy is historically accurate inside Herbert’s fictional future is almost beside the point. The symbolism is unmistakable. Both men inherit more than power. They inherit a legacy shaped by greatness, violence, and tragedy.
The shared lineage between Paul Atreides and Agamemnon forges an interesting and unexpected connection between The Odyssey and Dune: Part Three. In watching Denis Villenueve’s film later this year, one will also experience an unofficial sequel to The Odyssey, given that Agamemnon (played by Benny Safdie) plays a key role in the film.
The parallels between Agamemnon and Paul Atreides run even deeper than a shared bloodline.
After conquering Troy, Agamemnon returns home believing his greatest battles are behind him. Instead, he walks into a conspiracy that destroys both his family and his kingdom. Throughout The Odyssey, his death serves as a warning that victory can carry devastating consequences.
Paul follows a remarkably similar path. By the end of Dune, he has defeated House Harkonnen, overthrown the Emperor, and become ruler of the known universe. Everything appears to have gone according to prophecy. Then Dune Messiah begins. Instead of celebrating Paul’s triumph, Herbert explores what happens after the hero wins. Political conspiracies surround him. Religious fanaticism spreads beyond his control. The empire he fought to build becomes the source of his greatest suffering. Like Agamemnon, Paul’s greatest challenge begins after the war ends.
