After more than a decade, the Insidious series continues to expand its mythology surrounding the mysterious realm known as the Further. While the earlier movies largely revolved around the Lambert family, Insidious: Out of the Further takes the franchise in a new direction by introducing an entirely different family, new supernatural threats, and a clever inversion of the franchise’s traditional structure.
The story centers on Gemma (Amelia Eve), a single mother who lives with her young daughter in the house where she grew up in. Her seemingly ordinary life begins to unravel when she starts experiencing increasingly disturbing dreams and visions that tap into troubling memories of her childhood. As the supernatural events become more intense, Gemma discovers that her experiences may be connected to something that affected her mother years earlier.
Eventually, Gemma learns that she possesses an unusual ability: she can enter the Further while dreaming and potentially bring things from that realm back with her to the living world. Unfortunately, her daughter appears to have inherited the same ability, making her a target for the entities attempting to cross into the world of the living.
Why is Gemma Connected to the Further?
At the beginning of the movie, Gemma has little reason to believe that her childhood experiences were supernatural. She remembers her mother behaving strangely and had previously interpreted those experiences as signs of mental illness, emotional instability, or substance use.
Her perspective changes when her own nightmares begin escalating. What initially appears to be ordinary dreaming becomes something much more dangerous. In one particularly frightening sequence, Gemma finds herself trapped inside a pillow fort with seemingly no escape.
Seeking answers, Gemma eventually turns to someone familiar with the supernatural world of the Further. Elise Rainier, a returning character from the earlier movies, helps Gemma understand that what she is experiencing is not simply psychological. Gemma is a Courier (i.e., she has the ability to enter the Further), and her connection to that realm has apparently been passed down through her family.
The revelation also changes how Gemma understands her mother. The strange experiences she witnessed during childhood were not necessarily the result of her mother’s mental state. Her mother was dealing with the same supernatural forces that have now returned to threaten Gemma (more on that in a moment).
What is Elise Doing in Out of the Further?
Elise once again serves as a guide to someone struggling to understand the Further. However, her circumstances have changed considerably since her first appearance in the franchise.
Because Elise died at the end of the first movie, she now exists on the other side of the supernatural divide. Gemma is initially able to communicate with her through astral projection and other supernatural means.
As Gemma becomes more deeply involved with the Further, she eventually encounters Elise there directly. Elise helps her understand both her abilities and the threat facing her daughter.
Although Elise does not dominate the movie, her presence provides an important connective tissue to the earlier Insidious films. She essentially serves as the bridge between the franchise’s established mythology and Gemma’s new story.
Who Is Cyrus Lam?
The movie introduces Cyrus Lam as its primary antagonist. Unlike some of the franchise’s previous villains, Lee has a history that is directly tied to his obsession with death and the afterlife.
While alive, Lam was a cult leader who attracted followers through his claims about supernatural forces and the possibility of returning from death. He ultimately took his own life as part of an attempt to demonstrate that death was not the end.
His existence within the Further becomes an extension of that obsession. Years earlier, he tried (and failed) to use Gemma’s mother’s abilities as a Courier and hitch a ride from the Further to the real world. Now, he has set his sights on Gemma and her daughter as potential means to achieve this goal.
How Does Gemma Stop Cyrus Lam?
Gemma’s final confrontation with Lam takes place within the Further, where the supernatural rules of the realm make the encounter particularly dangerous.
Gemma’s boyfriend Nick (Brandon Perea), meanwhile, is in the real world and is targeting a trio of creepy Acolytes, followers of Lam’s who induce sleep to enter the Further and guard the Red Door from the previous movies.
Nick is able to awaken two of the three Acolytes, but struggles to awaken the third one. As this unfolds, Gemma’s daughter falls into the Further and Lam uses her to transport himself and various other undead from the Further into the real world.
Just in time and with Elise’s help, Gemma shows up and miracously transports Lam and all of his followers back to the Further. Upon realizing that Lam has failed to live up to his promise and that they are where they began. Lam’s followers turn on him and brutally tear him to pieces.
What Happens to Cyrus Lam After the Ending?
The movie doesn’t completely eliminate Cyrus Lam from its mythology, however.
The post-credits scene reveals that Lee remains trapped within the Further and was not completely destroyed by his undead followers.
The sequence depicts Lee strapped into a dentist’s chair while ghosts torment him by drilling into his teeth. On the surface, it functions as one final disturbing joke or scare. However, the scene also leaves the door open for the character to return.
